Otto – The Series
“Otto – The Series” is an unusual comedy format from the early 1990s centred around Otto Waalkes, combining classic crime entertainment with deliberately silly humour. Rather than telling a continuous story, the series blends newly filmed sketches featuring Otto with scenes from old Edgar Wallace films. These original sequences are completely redubbed and thereby fundamentally altered in content. Dialogue that was originally intended to be serious is transformed into absurd wordplay, and the once suspenseful crime plots are deliberately rendered ridiculous. In this way, Otto effectively “slips into” the dark world of the Wallace films and turns it into a parody driven by nonsense, running gags, and his distinctive style of humour. The result is an idiosyncratic mix of crime and comedy, whose particular appeal lies in its playful handling of the original material.
