Ronnie Lott

May 8, 1959 - Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.

Ronnie Lott is widely considered one of the greatest safeties in NFL history, renowned for his ferocious hitting and exceptional playmaking ability. Born May 8, 1959, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Lott attended Eisenhower High School in Rialto, California, before playing at USC (1977-1980). As a senior, he led the nation with eight interceptions and earned unanimous All-American honors, helping USC win the 1978 national championship.

Selected eighth overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1981 NFL draft, Lott made an immediate impact at cornerback. In his remarkable rookie season, he recorded seven interceptions and became only the second rookie in NFL history to return three interceptions for touchdowns, helping the 49ers win Super Bowl XVI. He finished second in Rookie of the Year voting behind Lawrence Taylor.

Lott switched to safety in 1985, where his punishing hits and instinctive play made him legendary. His toughness became iconic when he had the tip of his left pinky finger amputated after the 1985 season rather than miss the start of 1986. That year, he led the NFL with 10 interceptions despite missing two games. In 1991 with the Raiders, he again led the league with eight interceptions.

During his 14-year career, Lott won four Super Bowls with San Francisco, earned eight First-team All-Pro selections, and made 10 Pro Bowls. He finished with 63 career interceptions and recorded an NFL-record nine postseason interceptions. Known for his uncanny awareness and devastating open-field tackling, Lott was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000 on his first ballot. After retiring, he became a successful businessman, co-founding HRJ Capital and owning automobile dealerships, while also establishing the Lott IMPACT Trophy for college football's top defensive player.
