Yamaguchi (Jun Hamamura), a middle-school teacher during the war, moves into a nursing home. The one who greets him there is a former student, Yoshimura (Goichi Yamada). But Yamaguchi doesn't realize Yoshimura was his student. Yoshimura treats Yamaguchi with a smile, yet his eyes never smile. In fact Yamaguchi was a very strict, army-bred teacher whose violent discipline had damaged Yoshimura's hearing.
